וַיִּֽקָּהֲל֞וּ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵהֶם֮ רַב־לָכֶם֒ כִּ֤י כׇל־הָֽעֵדָה֙ כֻּלָּ֣ם קְדֹשִׁ֔ים וּבְתוֹכָ֖ם יְהֹוָ֑ה וּמַדּ֥וּעַ תִּֽתְנַשְּׂא֖וּ עַל־קְהַ֥ל יְהֹוָֽה׃

Then Korach and his followers congregated against Moses and against Aaron, saying to them: “What makes you so great? The entire congregation, all of them, are holy, and in their midst is Adonai. Why do you exult yourself above the congregation of Adonai?” (Numbers 16:3).

Korach and his followers go against Aaron and Moses, and are swallowed up by the earth. Although their argument was correct; each person is indeed holy, the way in which he was using his argument is what angered God. Instead of using the statement to empower people, Korach was using it for selfish gain and to put Moses and Aaron down. This Shabbat, may we all be reminded that our words have power, and that we are invited to use our words to empower others and ourselves, instead of tearing them down.

When Korach started a rebellion that threatened to tear the fragile community apart, Moses set aside his ego. He acted like a true leader by prioritizing the community’s needs over his desires. At a time when there is so much division in our society, may we all strive to be like Moses, working to bring people together and mend relationships, instead of working to sew division and hatred.

Imagine having a fierce dispute with someone you don’t like, inviting God to judge who is right on the issue, and God ruling in your favor! The earth opens and your rival is swollen by the earth. This Week’s Torah Portion: Korach – קֹרַח (Numbers 16:1−18:32)

Korach, the “evil hero” of our portion, makes a political and a spiritual claim against the “good heroes “Moses and Aaron.

The Political claim is – why did you take all the power for yourselves, and you do not share it with anyone else? The spiritual claim is the entire community is Holy so why are you pretending to be the only “holy” people worthy of getting close to the Divine and officiating all the sacred work of Adonai.

The answer is grounded in the Hebrew grammar. Adonai calls on the entire community saying to us “you shall be Holy for I Adonai am Holy.”

You shall – in the future, you are not holy yet. No person is holy. At best we are trying to achieve holiness in our lives through acts of lovingkindness towards one another. We are all on the way, trying to be there, but we all are not yet what we should and ought to be.
