At JLAB, learning is engaging and inspiring, providing learners with the knowledge of Jewish beliefs, values, and practices that enable them to live full and joyful Jewish lives. We want them to find a connection to Jewish communities and significance in Judaism, allowing your children to make informed decisions and to pass on their understanding and commitment to Jewish tradition and the Jewish people of future generations.
Our curriculum explores essential questions that are relevant throughout our lives. By addressing these issues from a Jewish perspective at each developmental stage, we foster a strong personal Jewish identity and a sense of connection to the global Jewish community. Key recurring questions and concerns include:
- Who am I? To what group do I belong? What binds us together? How am I like and unlike other groups?
- Where do we find commonality while respecting our differences?
- What does being a Jew mean? What skills do I need? What is required of me? What if I do not agree with some of the Jewish doctrines?
- Who/What is God? What is my personal relationship with God, and what do I personally believe about God?
- What is the role/meaning of good and evil, life and death? What can I do to foster life and bring about good?
- Where can I get guidance in my life? On what ideology can I base my decisions?
Many of these questions have no definitive answers. However, it is certain that grappling with these issues and feeling competent with Jewish ritual at each life stage is essential. In this way, we hope to prepare children and families to practice Judaism out of respect and love for Jewish tradition and personal decision, as well as through joy and knowledge of our history, practices, and ideals.
