Special D’var from Student Cantor Mike Jarvis
April 24, 2020 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
“My God, the soul that you have given me is pure.”
Leviticus is filled with laws insisting that a host of common traits can make someone or something permanently or temporarily “impure,” from skin diseases to menstruation. Even a house can be rendered impure. But what does it mean to be impure? Why is Torah so obsessed with these notions of purity? And how can we rescue meaning from such problematic language and make these laws meaningful to us? Student Cantor Mike Jarvis will explore some of the fascinating intentions behind the language and offer some ways to reinterpret these ideas in a modern age. (He might even sing a little, too.) Please join him and Rabbi David for this discussion at Shabbat services on Friday, April 24 at 7:00 pm on Zoom.
